Intent –Art at Hindhayes

Recent research used to inform practice: A study of Missouri public schools in 2010 found that greater arts education led to fewer disciplinary infractions and higher attendance, graduation rates and increased test scores.

Art goes beyond what we can see. Like language, it expresses a whole range of ideas, images and emotions. It is a way of stimulating children’s creativity and imagination through visual, tactile and sensory experiences. It is a process of communication of ideas, feelings and meanings. Teachers at Hindhayes recognise the imaginative aspect of Art whilst also valuing accuracy of observation and representation. Many good educational art experiences do not depend on the end products lasting for posterity. It must be remembered that the process is as important as the end result. Art at Hindhayes encourages children to develop their creative problem-solving skills, as well as teaching the children about colour, layout, and perspective.

Art and Design provides the children with the opportunities to develop and extend skills and an opportunity to express their individual interests, thought and ideas. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design.

Art at Hindhayes provides challenges for learners at all levels and seeks to reach children who might not otherwise be engaged in classwork, this is turn will encourage the development of self-esteem.
